Improvisation, soundscapes, melodies and rhythms are the cornerstones of this acclaimed quartet—and what captivates its audiences. Accordion, special-effects guitar, double bass and drums result in a personalized sound that merges well with that of an orchestra in this fusion of musical styles. The repertoire includes the band members’ own songs as well as their personal arrangements of Finnish compositions and jazz classics. Hear the bustle of the city as well as the tranquility of the countryside – both come forth in playful, rhythmic and moving melodies.

Jörgen Sundeqvist and Päivi Mettälä perform a lunchtime concert.

From Kramfors, Jörgen Sundeqvist is well-known in the Nordics both as a teacher and solo artist when it comes to the accordion. He’s toured the world, among others in Russia, the United  States, Kanada, New Zealand.

Päivi Mettälä is a prize-winning master player who’s performed both as a soloist and with orchestras in Finland, Sweden and Italy.

And if that weren’t enough, you can also enjoy some Karaoke – right in the center of our city. Our two hot tubs provide a cozy bathing experience and our “his and hers” dressing rooms are warmed. They’re also carpeted, so you won’t freeze your toes off. As twilight falls and the city lights appear, the scent of the sauna makes its way around the city. Our sauna director Seppo Lankinen welcomes you.

World premiere for Aulis Sallinen’s new work.

The concert will be featured live on YLE Radio 1.

Before its independence, in 1809, 400-year-old Kokkola has at times belonged to Sweden and Russia. This history can be heard in Swedish Dag Wiren’s romantic Serenade for Strings, and in Russian Anton Arensky’s Variations on the Theme of Tchaikovsky. Finland will be represented by its beloved Sibelius’s famed Love Suite.

The Central Ostrobothnian Orchestra and Kokkola Winter Accordion will also celebrate the present with a performance of Aulis Sallinen’s Duo Concertante. The performance will feature the new generation of accordion artists, Sonja Vertainen and Janne Valkeajoki and will be conducted by Anna-Maria Helsing, who has her roots in Ostrobothnia but has performed worldwide.

The singing and playing are lively and dancing is encouraged.

Tango Coloriage plays danceable tango, drums and Milonga from, among others, the Golden Age and the repertoire of Anibal Troilo and Osvaldo Pugliesen. The group has also earned acclaim for its performances of tango classics by Unto Mononen, Toivo Kärki and Kullervo Linna. The melancholic bandoneon, lyrical violin and pulsating double bass tells magical stories of a forgotten era, from last-century harbor neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, to the atmospheric dance halls in 1950s Finland.
