Tue. 12.2 Vionoja’s journey – from girl to goddess

Taide Vionoja, 7 p.m.
Haapalantie 121, Ylä-Ullava

Lydia Metsämaa was the most well-known art model during the first decades of Finnish independence. Her unique story is told through an exhibit on the second floor of the Vionoja museum in Ullava. It traces  her life, which stretched from poverty to the heart of the visual arts and sculpture scene. During her 24 years as a model at the Ateneum museum, she established frienships with, among others, Eliel Saarinen, Eero Järnefelt, Aarre Merikanto and untold numbers of other cultural influencers from our land. In Helsinki exists many sculptures, paintings and frescos that she posed for, and she is also depicted on Finnish bank notes from 1922-46. Veikko Vionoja became acquainted with Lydia in the artist’s residency Lallukka, where she lived from 1933. Many of our most known visual artists dedicated numerous works to her, as did Veikko Vionoja in her painting ”Tiemaisema” – which the public can view for the first time in the exhibit. As its title goes, Lydia Metsämaa life took her from girl to goddess.

A concert will be held following a presentation in the museum’s lower level.
