sonja-vertainen-kopio7389At this performance can be heard Finnish compositions.

Spend the afternoon of this Sunday in February enjoying fantastic Finnish music and food. Sitting still for six hours is not on the program – quite the opposite, in fact. The idea behind this performance is like that of the Proms concert series in England, where audience members are free to come and go as they please. Lose yourself in the music one minute; enjoy a wander, a visit with friends or a bite to eat the next. The meaning here is simply to enjoy yourself. In keeping with the spirit of the event, seating is unassigned. Singing will be a part of this event.

Veli Kujala’s composition for accordion and string quartet “Shimmer of the North” will make its world premiere at Kokkola Winter Accordion!

Participating also are, among others, Chydenius-kapelli, Kokkola Songfellows, Kokkola Regional Accordion Club, Torikööri, Kaustinen High School Music Club, K-30 orchestra and Junior Accordionists.

Amica Restaurant will cater the event.

Timo Närhinsalo presents his acclaimed dramatic monologue, “Viimeinen Päiväkäsky.” (Last Orders)

A Mannerheim-influenced supé (an upscale meal) will be served after the presentation, during which music will be performed.

PROGRAM:

Viimeinen Päiväkäsky
C.G.E. Mannerheim, president – Timo Närhinsalo
Place: St. Michel
Time: The evening of 21.1.1945

C.G.E Mannherheim is sitting in the office of his headquarters. For two days he’s there, drafting an agreement. He models it on the VSB pact between Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Untion, which he’s gotten from Zdanov.

In the meantime he’s in touch with Helsingfors, Paasikivi, Tanner – all headquarter generals. All the while, Colonel Grönvall is within earshot.

The marshal is penning a farewell of sorts to St. Michel, a city that has been his headquarters for three wars. He’s alone, as always. General Airo now leads the war against Germany.

Mannherheim sits isolated in a prison that he himself has created down to the smallest detail. He can see farther – in both the future and the past – than anyone else. Patriotic music plays in the background … perhaps Eroica.

He weighs the past against the future possibilities in an attempt to figure out his next move.

-First premiered in April 2000 in the officer’s club at St. Michel’s.

Marshal’s dinner:
Hors d’oeuvre
Fish (pike perch) á la Mannerheim
Apple tart
Drinks (alcoholic beverages will be served)

The evening’s musical menu:
Marianne Tunkkari, soprano
Sari Viinikainen, accordion
Finnish music: Oskar Merikanto, Heino Kaski, Jean Sibelius, Lasse Pihlajamaa, etc.

Tickets 80€ (Includes presentation; three-course dinner and drinks; musical performance.)

The evening’s program will last approximately 3 hours.
